A Family’s Christmas Lights Tradition Shines On in Henley!

Before long, the display became something others wanted to experience. Friends and family began visiting “to see the lights,” and eventually, part of the home was opened so the wider community could share in the joy. Over time, the collection grew to include between 56 and 60 unique nutcrackers, with the number still increasing, alongside handmade decorations created by Chris. A special “International Tree,” decorated with ornaments gifted by friends from around the world, became another highlight of the display.

At the heart of it all was Eddie, a much-loved brother-in-law whose enthusiasm helped take the display to new heights. 

Alongside John and Vincent, Eddie designed and set up the lights each year. The trio — fondly described as “big babies at Christmas time” — poured endless excitement and passion into the season. Eddie sadly passed away three years ago, but his spirit continues to shine in every corner of the display. He was also the one who encouraged Taylin, Gabby, and Toni to fully embrace the joy of Christmas lights.

Today, John and Vincent, affectionately known as “the Elves,” continue the tradition by planning, repairing, and preparing everything each year. Inflatables are carefully checked and tested and are only set up on open nights. All lights are solar or LED to minimise electricity usage, and friends still generously give their time to help load batteries and keep everything running.

Now celebrating their first Christmas in Henley, the family has only half of the display up due to ongoing repairs and rope lights that still need replacement. While full charity collections stopped a few years ago following a painful accusation, small donations for the Elves are accepted to help cover repairs and to recognise Vincent’s hard work and dedication.

Though not everything is lit yet, the heart of the tradition burns brighter than ever, with hopes firmly set on a full return of Christmas magic in 2026.
